Dental Implants and osseointegration have established themselves as a major scientific breakthrough which revolutionized clinical dentistry. Complications occur but are minimal when proper patient selection, evidence based biomaterials and clinical protocols are followed. The treatment with a higher complication rate is the esthetic zone. This is unfortunately true as the patient expectation are high for optimal and natural esthetics, the anatomy of the anterior jaw bone is often thin and resorbed and the clinical skills and knowledge to manage these complex anterior esthetic cases are often not available.
This online lecture will present in detail the clinical challenges of treating the anterior zone and the most frequently seen complications. Scientific evidence and clinical protocols will be given to present the steps to diagnose, prepare, plan, treat and follow the patient in these esthetic complex situations.
Surgical protocols in GBR planing and grafting, soft tissue augmentation and the optimal implant placement will be presented in lecture formal and in the form of a live surgery documentation.
- how to diagnose a compromised esthetic implant case
- what are the options to treat a failing esthetic implant case
- what are the clinical protocols to optimize a natural looking marginal gingiva, stable bone and esthetic implant crowns

Sascha A. Jovanovic was formally trained in periodontics at UCLA School of Den-tistry, in Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University and in Prosthodontics at Univer-sity of Aachen, Germany and holds a Master of Sciences degree in Oral Biology from UCLA.
He restricts his clinical work to dental implant therapy and bone & soft tissue reconstruction, is Course Director at UCLA Continuing Education, is Professor (Hon.) at Univ. of British Columbia, Division of Periodontics and Implants, Vancouver, is Assoc. Prof. (Hon.) at the University of Hong Kong, Department of Oral Surgery and is Founder and Academic Chairman of the gIDE Institute.
He is the past-president of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) and a past-Board member of the Osseointegration Foundation (OF). He was the program chair of the EAO 2000 annual scientific congress, recipient of the young investigator fellowship of the American Academy of Periodontology, of the Implantology award of the California Society of Periodontists and of the German Implant Society Research award. He is an honorary member of the South African Society of Periodontology.
Dr. Jovanovic's clinical research emphazises esthetic management in dental implant therapy and bone and soft tissue reconstruction techniques. His applied research focu-ses on bone regeneration with different bone graft materials, rhBMP-2 and barrier membranes as well as the biology of soft tissues around teeth and implants.
He lectures extensively worldwide and has published over 60 articles and book chap-ters, and one textbook titled Color Atlas of Implantology (Thieme Publ.). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the monthly publication 'Implant Tribune', is on several editorial boards for scientific journals and has published a DVD-education series 'Advanced Implant Therapy'.
Dr. Goumenos graduated from the School of Pharmacy (University of Athens, Greece) in 1982 and the School of Dentistry in 1988. He graduated from the Dpt. of Periodontology of Tufts University, School of Dental Medicine, Boston, where he obtained his Certificate in Periodontology in 1990 and his Master of Science Degree in 1991 from the Graduate School of the same University. He received a Doctorate Degree in 1998 from the Dpt. of Periodontology, of the University of Athens, Greece.
Dr. Goumenos was announced Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in 1996.
He was appointed Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the Dpt. of Periodontology, Tufts University, Boston, and since 1991 he has been a clinical instructor at the Dpt. of Periodontology of the University of Athens, Greece.
He has published several articles to date and he is lecturing both nationwide and internationally; he is a faculty member of gIDE and a member of AAP, EFP, AAO and EAO.
His main interest is in the biology of oral tissues and their management in periodontal and implant reconstructive plastic surgery.
